Homicide investigation underway after man shot at Cleveland shopping plaza

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating a homicide that occurred in a shopping plaza in the 11300 block of Buckeye Road Saturday afternoon.

Police were called to the scene around 2:45 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Once on scene, police found EMS treating a 26-year-old man, later identified as Michael Powell, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to University Hospitals where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

A 29-year-old man was also shot and was taken to University Hospitals for treatment.

Police learned that Powell had been in an altercation with a 22-year-old man that resulted in the shooting.

The 22-year-old man was arrested a short time later after a second shooting that occurred in the 2800 block of East 116th Street. The second incident resulted in the 22-year-old man being shot. He was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital to treat his gunshot wounds, according to police.

The two shootings are believed to be related, police said.

The homicide remains under investigation.
