Jesuits release list of priests accused of sexual abuse with a minor

CLEVELAND — The USA Midwest Province Jesuits released the names of Jesuits accused of sexual abuse of a minor.

The Jesuits are or were members of the USA Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus since 1955.

The Midwest Province was formed in June 2017 from the former Chicago, Chicago-Detroit, Detroit, and Wisconsin provinces, and encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The Midwest Province currently has 510 Jesuit members; approximately 4,000 Jesuits have served in the province since 1955.

The following list is the names of Jesuits from Ohio who have multiple "established" accusations and were investigated:

  • Fr. Henry A. Brockman - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, died in 1973.
  • Fr. Ignatius M. Burrill - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, died in 1987.
  • Fr. James A Condon - St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, died in 1993.
  • Fr. Robert J. Erpenbeck - Jesuit Novitiate and Milford Retreat Center in Milford, died in 1986.
  • Fr. Mark A Finan - St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, died in 1973.
  • Fr. John H. Gallen - St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sylvania, died in 2011.
  • Fr. Thomas M. Gannon - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, died in 2011.
  • Fr. Gerald B. Garvey - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, died in 1960.
  • Br. Howard J. McDonough - Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, died in 1975.
  • Fr. Edward J. O'Brien - Xavier University in Cincinnati, died in 1983.
  • Fr. Thomas J. Powers - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, John Carroll University in University Heights and Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, dismissed in 2001.

The following is a list of Jesuits from Ohio who received a single "established" allegation after dying:

  • Fr. Emmanual Briffa - Malta, visiting friends in Canton, dismissed in 1963.
  • Fr. Robert C. Boone - St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, died in 2000.
  • Fr. Roy A. Drake - John Carroll University in University Heights, died in 2008.
  • Fr. Oscar Gumucio - St. Patrick's Parish and Lincoln Junior High School in Cleveland, dismissed in 1975.
  • Fr. Donald O. Nastold - St. Francis Xavier Church in Cincinnati, died in 2007.
