CLEVELAND — A man who was charged for raping a woman in a Cleveland parking garage and accused of a slew of other crimes has pleaded guilty to multiple charges, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
Michael Hutchins, 18, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of rape, one count of kidnapping, two counts of robbery, two counts of burglary, one count of grand theft, two counts of theft and one count of escape.
Authorities say that on Oct. 9, 2018, Hutchins escaped from custody while being transported to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center by members of the Cleveland Christian Home.
The following month, on Nov. 4, the attorney’s office states that Hutchins stole a laptop computer from a 53-year-old woman’s office at Cleveland State University. The attorney’s office said that Hutchins was able to sneak into her office by blending in with other students and entering the Wolstein Center.
On Feb. 14, 2019, authorities said Hutchins approached a 35-year-old woman walking through the 5th Street Arcade in Downtown Cleveland and grabbed her cell phone out of her purse. When the woman and a nearby person who saw the crime ran after him, Hutchins tossed the phone on the ground and ran off.
Just hours later, Hutchins walked into a gym across the street from the Arcade and stole a man’s keys and then fled the scene.
Later than day, Hutchins went to a nearby parking garage on Prospect Avenue and followed a woman into an elevator. When the woman went to walk out of the elevator, he attacked and sexually assaulted her. The attorney’s office said that the woman tried to escape, but Hutchins dragged her to her vehicle. He then attempted to drive away in her car but struck a wall. He left after taking the woman’s phone and money.
Hutchins was arrested five days later.
He is scheduled to appear in court on March 16 for sentencing.
