A man shot himself while running police early Friday morning according to Cleveland police.

Police said that around 12:15 a.m. Friday two officers spotted a man wanted for an undisclosed crime. When the officers slowed down to stop the man, he took off running from the area of East 143rd Street and Kinsman Avenue.

Police said as the man took off running they heard one shot being fired and assumed the suspect was shooting at them as they chased him through backyards.

Two dozen officers set up a perimeter and after about an hour they were able to locate the man inside a home on East 142nd Street south of Kinsman Avenue.

The man was arrested after police located him.

Police also found a .22 caliber handgun in the area and believed that gun to be the one the suspect was carrying and fired while running.

As police were about to transport the man to jail he informed them that he was suffering from a gunshot wound to the ankle. The wound appeared to be minor but Cleveland EMS did take the man to a local hospital to be checked out.

Police said they did not return fire during the incident and that no officers were injured.
