CLEVELAND — An officer who graduated from the Cleveland Police Academy last month has been placed on restricted duty status after it was discovered that he had a felony record and served prison time in Norway.

Patrol Officer Shawn Simmons, 38, graduated from the police academy on January 18, 2019, according to a news release from the City of Cleveland. He was on probationary status on Basic Patrol after graduating. He is now on restricted duty status pending the outcome of the Internal Affairs investigation.

Simmons did not disclose that he had a felony record, or that he had served time in the country of Norway in his employment application, nor did the information become available during an extensive background screening, the release states.
