Police investigate officer-involved shooting after man in stolen car opened fire

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened at East 83rd Street and Gill Avenue.

Officers received a call around 9:15 a.m. about a Ford Taurus taken from a woman at gunpoint.

Around 11:15 a.m., police received another call from a laundromat in the 6200 block of Fleet Avenue about a man brandishing a weapon who was driving a black Ford Taurus.

Officers spotted the vehicle and began a vehicle pursuit.

Police said due to the man's driving, the vehicle sustained damage and caught fire.

The man bailed from his vehicle and officers began chasing him on foot, according to police.

The man pulled out a handgun and began firing at officers. Police returned fire and the man was hit multiple times, police said.

The man was transported to the hospital in serious condition, police said.

Five officers were involved in the shooting, including one RTA officer. They will all be placed on administrative leave with pay for at least three days.

No officers or citizens were injured.

RTA officials said the 67R buses will replace the Green and Blue lines rail service from the East 55th Street station due to the shooting.
