President Donald Trump wrote a letter to the family of fallen Cleveland police officer David Fahey, offering his condolences for their loss.

Cleveland.com was the first to report on the letter, which was sent to Fahey's mother and stepfather — retired police officers Jackie and Mark Ketterer.

Cleveland police confirmed the information to News 5.

Fahey was hit by a car and killed on Interstate 90 in January. Israel Alvarez, 44, was charged in his death.

The 39-year-old officer was hired on July 1, 2014, and assigned to the first district. He was a Navy veteran and an avid Cleveland sports fan.

Earlier this week, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams thanked the community for their support of the department.

Williams said thousands of cards and letters of support from around Northeast Ohio and across the country came to the department after Fahey was killed.

Mark Ketterer also thanked those who lined the streets during the funeral procession.

"Just the respect they showed to this fallen officer was overwhelming to our family," he said.
