A Cuyahoga County Sheriff officer was involved in a shooting near the Galleria Monday morning.

The shooting happened near the intersection of E.12th and Lakeside around 8:30 a.m. after the officer witnessed a street robbery and tried to intervene.

"It happened 50 ft, 100 ft behind me, and I heard a single shot,” said Mike Goldstein, who was heading to work when he witnessed part of the incident. "I immediately looked behind me, and I was inside the garage, and I saw a kid running full speed past the garage entrance.”

The suspect had a loaded gun and a knife, according to a police report. Cleveland police call logs indicate the suspect tried to shoot the officer. That's when the officer fired at the suspect, hitting him in the leg.

The 27-year-old wounded suspect then ran a half block to the entrance of the Galleria and continued down to the building's basement. Police logs say he was arrested in the basement and transported to MetroHealth Medical Center from the scene by ambulance.

The officer was not injured. He is on leave while the Cleveland police use of force team investigate the shooting.

“It’s just crazy to have this happen right out front," added Goldstein.

Originally, a Cleveland police source told newsnet5.com the suspect had fired his gun.
