Store clerk shot to death during attempted robbery turned shootout in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — A man was arrested after an attempted robbery turned into a shootout at a store Tuesday night in Cleveland's Forest Hills neighborhood on the border of Glenville, leaving a store clerk dead, according to Cleveland police.

Police responded to In and Out Beverage, 891 Lakeview Road, at about 8:40 p.m. for a man shot in connection to a robbery.

When police arrived, they found a 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head behind the counter, according to a police report.

The 33-year-old man was taken to University Hospitals where he was pronounced dead, police say.

Two other men, ages 18 and 58, were working in the store with the victim when two men entered the store with guns in a robbery attempt.

The 33-year-old man and the 18-year-old suspected robber exchanged gunfire with each other, the report says.

The two other store clerks were uninjured during the shooting, according to the report.

The 18-year-old man was located in the 10700 block of Kimberly Avenue, where he was arrested and taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound, the report says.

The 18-year-old Cleveland man is not being named, as charges have not yet been filed. According to the report, he is still confined to University Hospitals.

Police have not located person involved in the robbery.

The shooting remains under investigation.
