Tremont residents demand better construction site clean up and enforcement

CLEVELAND — Some residents in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood are simply tired of dealing with what they call "inconsiderate contractors," who aren't keeping up with their construction sites.

Longtime Tremont resident Connie Saltis told News 5 her neighbors are becoming aggravated with contractors who are blocking sidewalks and leaving construction debris scattered over their job sites.

"Well besides the filth and that I can't walk on the sidewalk, I mean it is unsafe," Saltis said. "It's gross, it's gross. I mean I'm not allowed to leave garbage on my front yard, I don't understand why he can for months on end."

Other homeowners told News 5 the City of Cleveland granted too many tax abatements, triggering a glut of construction projects, in the already-packed community.

Michael Bowden is calling for city inspectors to asses the job sites to make sure contractors are following all city safety and building regulations.

"That's the least they could do, send an inspector out, take a look and see what's going on," Bowden said. "They should be more concerned about the neighborhood, and the neighbors around them."

Lincoln Heights Block Club Chairperson Henry Senyak told News 5 it's critical the city hold contractors accountable.

"If they don't monitor this, there's no way to gauge what's right and what's wrong," Senyak said. "Issue a citation ordering them to clean up in 48 hours. If it's still unresolved, then issue another citation, and then suspend their general contractor registration for 30 days...That might get some action, because there is too much construction going on in Tremont."

Cleveland Councilman Kerry McCormack told residents via Facebook he would get city inspectors involved.

Meanwhile, Saltis had a final message for the councilman.

"I'd like him to come out and look at it, and see would he'd be okay living next to that," Saltis said. "We need the city to take some action."
