A vacant lot in Cleveland will soon be transformed into a park and memorial for an officer who was killed in the line of duty.

On March 1, 2008, Officer Derek Wayne Owens was shot and killed while chasing four suspects in a foot pursuit. He had been with the Cleveland Police Department for 10 years and was assigned to the 4th District, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The future park is located where Owens was shot, 10404 Parkview Ave. Initial cleanup of the lot was done by the Court Community Service program and overseen by the Cleveland Police Foundation.
