EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — An 18-year-old man was found hiding in an attic of a Cleveland home after leading East Cleveland police officers on a 70 mph chase through city streets Wednesday.

At around 12:30 a.m., East Cleveland police stopped a Chevrolet Cobalt for a broken headlight on Woodworth Road.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off, turning onto St. Clair Avenue, driving through several red lights with speeds reaching above 70 mph, police said.

The driver, identified as an 18-year-old male, weaved in and out of traffic through multiple streets. Police said when he attempted to make a left turn on Varian, he “again almost lost control of the vehicle,” the report said.

Eventually, when the driver reached Bonna Avenue, he fled on foot and into a home in the 6800 block of Bonna Avenue.

With permission to search the home, officers found him hiding in the attic.

The 18-year-old driver told officers he fled during the initial traffic stop because he knew his driver’s license was suspended.

The driver was booked into the East Cleveland Police Department where he was issued a traffic citation and a headlight violation.

The driver was released on waiver until his court hearing.
