4 more flu deaths in Cuyahoga County, 21 deaths this season

Four more people have died from the flu in Cuyahoga County, marking a total of 21 deaths this season.

In this fifth week of the 2017-2018 flu season, three women from Cleveland, ages 61, 88 and 91, and one woman from Highland Heights, age 93, have all died.

According to the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, 1,450 people have been hospitalized for the flu this season, nearing the highest seasonal total of 1,581 in the 2014-2015 season. The majority of those hospitalizations (1,195) have happened since Christmas.

As of January 29, the Cleveland Clinic says it has admitted 1,114 patients with flu symptoms this season. This is the highest number of inpatients the hospital has seen in recent years.

The board of health says 83 percent of the hospitalizations this season have been for people over the age of 50.
