The Chagrin Falls School District is mourning the loss of one of their teachers and his wife, who were both recently killed in a car crash.
According to an announcement shared by district Superintendent Robert Hunt on the Chagrin Falls school district web site on Friday, Lenny May and his wife, Lana May, were killed in a crash in Bradenton, FL.
The announcement said former Chagrin Falls resident Diane Kiffner also died in connection with the incident, and former Chagrin Falls School Board Member and current volunteer football coach, Paul Kiffner, suffered serious injuries and is being treated at the hospital.
Lenny May was an English teacher, coach and athletic director at Chagrin Falls High School, while Lana May was an elementary school teacher in Mentor.
Administrators said Lenny May served as the English Department Chairperson and “was known for his passion for teaching and working with his colleagues.”
Lenny May also led the school’s newspaper the Tiger Times. He served as the district athletic director for 12 years, where Hunt said the athletic program grew and eventually offered 24 varsity teams.
Under Lenny May’s tenure, four school teams won state championships. But Hunt said Lenny May’s success with the school district wasn’t only about sports, but also about his focus on developing students. He was recognized as Chagrin Falls Teacher of the Year in 1987.
Chagrin Falls School District is providing support for their students and staff during this time.
