One dead after large fight near Milkovich Middle School

A large fight near Milkovich Middle School turned deadly on Wednesday night, according to Maple Heights Police.

Police first received a call around 8:36 p.m. about a physical fight. Later, officers were told shots were fired and that one male had been hit.

Police were dispatched to the area of Stafford Park, located at 5400 Mayville Avenue. Upon arrival, officers said they found several groups of people at the Milkovich Middle School.

Maple Heights police were assisted by officers from Garfield Heights, Bedford Heights, Oakwood Village and the Bedford Police Departments.

First responders said they found Darnez Canion, 20, lying in the drive of the school with a gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid and performed CPR until the Maple Heights Fire Department arrived on scene, according to police.

Canion was taken to the Bedford Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Two people were taken into custody. Charges are pending, according to police who are conducting an investigation.
