CLEVELAND — Taking on a new home improvement project as a homeowner can sound exciting and challenging. But before you pick up the hammer or paintbrush, make sure to avoid these common mistakes.
Preparation
Often times people get ahead of themselves during simple projects like painting a new room. They don't take the time to wash, sand or prime walls properly. In any project, get your work space ready first before you even begin to make the changes.
Materials
Don't cut corners by buying the cheapest materials at the store. Spend a little more money upfront and opt for a middle level material or higher. This will more than likely save you money in the long run.
Limits
Can you actually handle the project you've set out to accomplish? In many DIY fails, people tend to bite off more than they can chew. For example, if you've never patched a hole in a wall it's probably not a good idea to plaster an entire room. Tim the Tool Man didn't learn everything at once.
Budget
Ahead of any project make a list of the materials you need and how much they cost. Then add 10% to the total. This way any unexpected expenses will be covered and if won't keep you from getting the job done.
If you're following a YouTube video tutorial, contractor Devin Hansen recommended watching several. "There's all kinds of different ways to do things. Some people will show you a shortcut and that's not always the best way to do things."
Plus, take advantage of the DIY sections at hardware stores. Often times they'll have employees who can answer any questions about materials or the project you're starting.
