WASHINGTON — A 45-year-old employee of Shaker Heights City School District was arrested in Washington, D.C. Friday in connection with a sexual abuse case involving a child, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

From 2009 to 2014, Joan Meyer is accused of engaging in sexual acts with a minor, police said.

Meyer, a library media specialist at Onaway Elementary School, was arrested in Washington, D.C. and charged with first degree child sexual abuse.

Shaker Heights City School District said while it can not discuss the specifics of the case, the incident involves an “improper relationship with a teenage student” that began in 2009 in Washington, D.C.

The district said that none of the allegations against Meyer occurred within the 16 months that she has worked for the district.

Meyer has been placed on paid administrative leave and directed to have no contact with Shaker Heights students or anyone else in the school community, the district said.

Shaker Heights City School District said Meyer was hired in August 2019 and she passed a Bureau of Criminal Investigation record check.
