An 88-year-old man with dementia was struck and killed in a hit-skip Thursday night in Madison Township.
The incident happened shortly before midnight on the 7700 block of Middle Ridge Road. According to police, the 88-year-old was sitting in the roadway when a car swerved to avoid hitting him. The driver went back to check on the man, but another car drove by and hit him. The second car then sped off towards Countyline Road, police said.
Other bystanders used their cars to create a wall around the victim until an ambulance arrived. The 88-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later died from his injuries.
The 88-year-old was identified as Stephen E. Balazs. According to authorities, the man left his home for an unknown reason without his family's knowledge.
Police didn't provide a description of the suspect vehicle.
