Many Sandy Point Condos residents were stranded in their homes Saturday due to flood waters.
Now the homeowners are blaming Madison Township and Lake County for exacerbating a drainage problem.
The homeowners say the increased flooding is due to the construction of an apartment complex next door.
Sandy Point resident Albert Lawrence told newsnet5.com that several residents fought against the construction because of fears that it would increase flooding in the area.
“They took down the trees and raised the elevation,” Lawrence said. “Of course we got more water.”
The rainwater poured into backyards, flooded streets and caused property damage to the homes that are closest to the construction.
“This was just the first rain, if we’re going to get more its really going to be bad,” resident Donna Schroeder said.
Schroeder and other residents said they’ve repeatedly asked Lake County for help but their messages were not returned.
“County, zoning, building anything to come in here and take care of this problem and help us out,” she said. “Or we’re gonna drown.”
Lake County Engineer James Gills did not have a comment and told newsnet5.com to contact the storm water department. The department did not return a request for comment on Monday.
