Willoughby Hills police K9 recovering after suspected drunk driver strikes cruiser

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio — A Willoughby Hills police K9 is recovering after the cruiser he was inside was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

The crash happened at 11:57 p.m.

Police said they were investigating a disabled vehicle in the right lane on Interstate 90 westbound near Bishop Road when the driver of a maroon Chevrolet Malibu failed to yield to the emergency vehicles on scene and crashed into the rear of a Willoughby Hills K9 police cruiser.

The K9 officer was out of the car at the time, but his partner was inside.

The K9 was taken and treated at the MedVet Emergency Clinic in Mentor and is recovering at home.

Three men were inside of the Malibu at the time of the crash. They were all transported to local hospitals.

Police said alcohol is believed to be involved.
