LORAIN, Ohio — A woman was killed in an apartment fire Sunday night in Lorain, according to Lorain Assistant Fire Chief Chris Radman.

Firefighters responded shortly before 7 p.m. to a fire at Fairway Apartments, 3730 Beavercrest Dr., in Lorain.

When firefighters went into the unit, there was barely any fire, but the apartment was filled with smoke, according to Radman.

A 61-year-old woman was transported to Mercy Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The woman has been identified, but officials are not releasing her name until next of kin have been notified.

Authorities said there was not a working smoke detector inside the apartment.

Other units had some minor smoke damage, with an estimated $5,000 in damages.

The fire remains under investigation.
