Police cruiser rolls on top of Kent officer

Posted

A Kent police officer was injured when his cruiser rolled over him as he was making an arrest early Sunday.

According to police, officer Mitch Smith was driving on South Water Street around 1:45 a.m. when he saw a man punching and kicking another man in the road in front of a crowd of people.

Officer Smith got out of his cruiser, pulled the suspect off the other man and wrestled him to the ground.

While Smith was on the ground, his cruiser rolled over his leg. Police say it's unclear at this time why and how the cruiser rolled forward.

Smith was transported to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center where he was treated and released.

The suspect in the assault was arrested and charged.

The case is under investigation.
