WINDHAM, Ohio — Windham schools superintendent Laura Amero is facing a slew of charges after she allegedly had sex with one student and allegedly attempted to have sexual relations with a second student, according to an indictment from Portage County Common Pleas Court.

Charges stem from when she allegedly had sex with a high school boy in 2017 when he was 16, the indictment states. She is also accused of attempting to have sex with a boy who was 16 and 17 between 2015 and 2017.

Amero, 35, is charged with two felony counts of sexual battery in connection to one of the victims, two felony counts of attempted sexual battery in connection to the second victim and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of a crime victim or witness, the indictment states.

According to the Record-Courier, she was principal of the junior/senior high school during the times the alleged sexual battery happened.

Windham Board of Education President Darryl McGuire told the Record-Courier that he believes police brought the matter to the school district's attention.

Amero was appointed superintendent after former superintendent Gregg Isler announced his retirement.

She was given a 3.5 year contract with a salary of $96,500. Her first day as superintendent was Feb. 1, according to the Record-Courier.

According to school officials, the school board voted unanimously to suspend Amero. She has been placed on unpaid administrative leave.

With Amero on leave, Isler was named acting superintendent effective April 2.
