Police are investigating a crash that killed a 16-year-old girl Tuesday morning.

The teen was identified as Macie Behringer, a Jackson Township resident and senior at Lake High School in Uniontown.

According to the Stark County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 8:15 a.m. on Market Avenue North, just south of Lake O'Pines Street Northeast in Lake Township.

Behringer was driving a 2002 Honda Civic northbound on Market Avenue when she lost control of the car and slid into the southbound lane, authorities said. Her car was hit by a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. Behringer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.

The Caravan's driver was treated by EMS and released at the scene.

A preliminary investigation points to speed being a factor in the crash.

Lake Local Schools released the following statement:

Due to the tragic loss of Lake Senior Macie Behringer earlier this morning in a fatal two-car accident, all scheduled Lake High School athletic events have been cancelled.
Lake Middle School athletic events will go on as scheduled.
Our counselors will be available in the Hot Spot for the remainder of today for those who feel the need to talk to someone. Students should also feel free to rely on that trusted teacher, principal, parents, and others who may be of help during this difficult time.
