LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A weather-related crash in Stark County Wednesday morning resulted in the death of a New Franklin woman.

The crash happened just before 10 a.m. on Portage Street, just east of Akron Road in Lawrence Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway patrol, Nancy A. Markwood, 72, was driving west down Portage Street when a vehicle going in the opposite direction lost control on the partially snow-covered road, crossed over the center line and hit her car.

The impact caused Markwood’s car to drive off the road.

Markwood was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver — a 73-year-old woman from Canal Fulton — was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

Troopers said both drivers were wearing seatbelts when the crash happened.

The incident is still under investigation. Authorities said drugs/alcohol aren’t thought to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Wednesday’s crash is the fifth fatal crash in Stark County this year, authorities said.
