Authorities ruled arson as the cause of the Akron house fire that killed seven people last week, including five children.

Stanley O. Ford, 58, of Akron was arrested in connection to a fatal arson fire on Fultz Road. He is being held on $7 million bond at the Summit County Jail.

Ford appeared in court on Wednesday on one count of aggravated arson and seven counts of aggravated murder.

When Ford appeared in court, the judge said, "the court cannot recall in recent Summit County history such a tragic incident, which it involves seven victims."

The judge said if Ford is indicted and convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Authorities searched Ford's two homes on Hillcrest Street on May 18, just around the corner from the house that was destroyed Monday, according to Akron police. (Click through photos above to see more)

“This is a devastating tragedy for our community,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said. “The safety of our residents is my top priority, and I vow to do everything in my power to ensure that justice is achieved for these victims and their families.”The fire happened n the early morning hours of May 15 at 693 Fultz Road in Akron.

Anthony Huggins, the brother of the late Dennis Huggins, said the family does not know Stanley Ford but his family is finding comfort that police have found someone connected to the fire.

"Relieved and we can start at least somewhat of a closure process. I know there's an ongoing investigation and there's a lot of litigation, but I am grateful for the collaborative effort," Huggins said.

“The loss of life can never be replaced, but through the collaboration of state and local officials, we can bring to justice the man responsible for this horrific incident,” Interim State Fire Marshal Jeff A. Hussey. “We will continue working with all agencies involved to see this case through until the end.”
