Foul play not suspected in 10-year-old Springfield Township boy's death

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Police are investigating the death of a 10-year-old boy in Summit County.

Authorities were called to a home in Springfield Township Tuesday for an unresponsive child.

The boy, a student at Schrop Elementary School, was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, authorities said.

Foul play isn't suspected.

Springfield Schools released the following statement on the boy's unexpected death.

Springfield Local Schools are saddened to report that one of our students at Schrop Intermediate School has unexpectedly passed away. The Spartan Community extends sympathy to the family in their time of need. We are committed to providing our students, families, and staff with the support that they need. Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about this tragic event. Discussing thoughts and feelings about this situation is important in helping your child work through his or her grief. In a district wide communication to the parents of each child Wednesday afternoon the district notified parents that counselors will continue to be available to assist students and staff who need help processing this incident. We ask that you please respect the privacy of the family at this time as they mourn the loss of their son.

The boy’s cause of death and identity have not been released.
