An Ohio State Highway Patrol cruiser was involved in a crash on Route 2 near Painesville in Lake County just before 9 p.m. Friday.

A trooper was driving west on State Route 2 near State Route 44 in Painesville Township when their patrol vehicle was hit by a 2011 Toyota Scion, according to Painesville police .

The Toyota was traveling east on State Route 2 in the westbound lanes, and after initial contact, the Scion caught on fire, police said.

The driver of the Scion, Jerry Alberico, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The trooper involved in the crash sustained non-life- threatening injuries and was transported to Tri-Point Medical Center in Concord Township. The trooper was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon.

News 5 crews were on the scene and found the cruiser with heavy front-end damage.

OSHP involved in crash

Painesville police said this crash remains under investigation.
