So if you're in the market for anything from a mattress to a new car, it's the perfect time to buy.

Agnes Igodan moved into a studio apartment in Lakewood last year and she’s way overdue for a shopping trip. So this Labor Day weekend, you can probably guess where she’ll be.

“I'm kind of a minimalist, so I don't have much furniture, but I'm thinking a couch wouldn’t hurt you know,” Igodan said.

“I'm definitely going to be out there trying to beat the crowds.

And there’s sure to be a ton of them. Dr. Elad Granot, the Dean of the College of Business and Economics at Ashland University says, many retailers take advantage of the holiday to slash prices and offer deep discounts on merchandise.

“Three day weekends are long weekends, and sometimes we look for things to do. And one of the things we do is we go out and we shop and so for retailers, it's a golden opportunity to have us in the store,” Granot said.

That means shoppers like Igodan can get some great deals on furniture.

Online retailer Wayfair has discounts of up to 75% off – and on Overstock.com you can get 20% off plus free shipping on select items. And if you need a new mattress there’s no better time to buy than right now.

“You're going to find the best deals at places like Mattress Firm, they have 11% off your order. Wayfair up to 75% off mattresses which is a really great deal,” Sara Skirboll, the Shopping and Trends expert for RetailMeNot, said.

RetailMeNot is a website that collects coupons and other saving tips for consumers.

Skirboll says deals on appliances on labor day weekend are only second to those on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“Small appliances think things like blenders and that sort you know anything else that you put on your kitchen countertop, upwards of 40% off so go to bed bath and beyond. You're going to find small appliances upwards at 40% off and also Home Depot upwards of 40% off,” Skirboll said.

Shoppers can also save big on end-of-summer clearance items, like clothing, swimwear, patio furniture and grills. For example, people who shop at Lowe’s can get up to 50% off grills.

And the savings even stretch to big purchases.

“Many car dealerships will be offering their 2019 models on sale simply because they have to clear their lots and it's really important to say for car shoppers it's definitely a buyers’ market,” Granot said.

But even though there are a ton of great deals out there – its important to shop smart.

Wait until Black Friday to buy small electronics – and steer clear of Apple products until the newest line-up comes out in September. That’s when the older models go on sale.

Also, double up on coupons and cashback offers to make every dollar stretch.
