Man killed in two vehicle crash in Ottawa County

Posted

A 64-year-old man from Indiana was killed Saturday afternoon after he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by another vehicle, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Police said John J. Word of Fremont Indiana was travelling westbound in a 2015 Ford Transit on Duff Washa Road and did not stop at a posted sign. His vehicle was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado hauling a 24-foot boat that had been travelling northbound on State Route 19.

Word was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the pickup, a 58-year-old Thornville resident, and the 43-year-old passenger sustained incapacitating injuries in the crash. Both were wearing seatbelts. They were flown by helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo.

Alcohol and drug use do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
