COLUMBUS, Ohio — The mother of an inmate beaten to death by his cellmate is set to receive $225,000 from the Ohio prison system.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction agreed recently to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Eugenia Wade over the death of her son, 26-year-old Luther Wade.

Eugenia Wage filed the lawsuit last year after 31-year-old Casey Pigge smashed Wade’s skull with a cinder block dug out of his cell wall at the Lebanon Correctional Institution in February 2016.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the complaint said prison officials were negligent for failing to inspect cells when it was known inmates commonly removed blocks from walls.

Pigge is considered one of the most violent inmates in Ohio’s prison system, having committed two slayings while in state custody.
