CLEVELAND — Let's take a moment to calmly discuss the comments Baker Mayfield made to GQmagazine.
During the interview, a segment from SportsCenter was on the television, and Mayfield said, "I cannot believe the Giants drafted Daniel Jones. It blows my mind."
That's it. That's all we know that he said about Jones.
In commenting on the piece, some have misquoted Mayfield by adding a comment that Mayfield made separately about how "quarterback experts" get the draft wrong.
“Some people overthink it,” Mayfield told GQ. “That's where people go wrong. They forget you've gotta win.”
Barstool put the quotes together to draw the ire of Giants fans.
Mayfield commented on the post and told the sports site that it was playing fast and loose with his interview.
"This is not what I said.... just so we’re clear. I also said I was surprised I got drafted number one. Then was talking about the flaws in evaluating QB’s. Where I brought up winning being important. Reporters and media will do anything to come up with a click bait story. Heard nothing but good things and wish nothing but the best for Daniel," Mayfield wrote in an Instagram comment to the post.
Barstool wasn't the only national media to misquote Mayfield. Colin Cowherd, whose entire business model appears to be dedicated to throwing shade at Cleveland, jumped in on the conversation and also combined the quotes.
“Patrick Mahomes’ NFL record, he’s a winner... 6-7 is Baker Mayfield’s record, he is some winner.”@ColinCowherd wants to see the Browns QB prove it on the field following Daniel Jones comments pic.twitter.com/jJlA5dc5yf

Mayfield did say that the Giants taking Jones blew his mind. Sadly, such blatant truth-speakery nowadays is simply too much for some folks to handle.
Here we have the rare athlete who doesn't just mumble platitudes but who actually speaks his mind and gets slammed for ... saying what we all know to be true.
Jones getting drafted blew everyone's mind.
This isn't even a controversial statement.
Giants fans booed the decision at Met Life Stadium when it was announced. (Heads up, understandably strong language in the clips below.)

This is the worst day of my life. I feel like I’m in a bad nightmare but I keep pinching myself and it’s still real. The @Giants actually just picked Daniel Jones. I hate everything. pic.twitter.com/LWiE6Yakfp

Even members of the national media questioned the Giants decision of drafting Jones.
Why in the world would you draft Daniel Jones at 6 instead of trading for Josh Rosen?

"The Giants did Dwayne Haskins a favor. By allowing him to fall in the draft, he fell to his hometown team in Washington with a better offensive line. Dwayne Haskins is going to make less money, but he's in a better position than Daniel Jones." — @criscarter80 pic.twitter.com/HwOYG7LNtX

Mayfield tells it like it is.
We have a name for guys like that in Cleveland: One of us.
