CLEVELAND — Cleveland Metropolitan Schools welcomes over 30,000 students back to class Monday.

Drivers are reminded to stop for school buses, and watch for children at bus stops and walking to and from school. Remember - if the bus stops and the stop sign comes out, driver in both directions MUST stop, except if there is a divided highway.

Here's a quick reminder of Ohio's law regarding passing a school bus that is stopped.

  • If a bus is stopped on a street that has fewer than four lanes, all traffic proceeding in either direction must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus.
  • If a bus is stopped on a street that has four or more lanes, only traffic proceeding in the same direction must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus.
  • Drivers must stop until the school bus resumes motion or until signaled by the bus driver to proceed.

The district is also launching the “Say Yes to Education” initiative this year at 16 schools, providing scholarships to high school graduates, if they complete all four years in Cleveland.

It will be a hot Monday for students returning to school, but the storms will hold off until late Monday and Tuesday morning.
