YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Catholic Diocese of Youngstown Bishop George V. Murry died Friday at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, according to News 5 media partner Ohio.com.

The diocese announced earlier this week that Murry had been admitted for inpatient treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The bishop was being treated for leukemia for the third time since 2018.

A statement from the diocese last week announcing that he was stepping down said, “This past April, his leukemia returned and he resumed treatment. With this third bout of leukemia, his present state of health leaves him less able to fulfill the tasks entrusted to him as bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown.”
