Summer is a big time of the year for home improvement projects, but are local hardware stores charging you the right prices? There’s a new report out today from the Cuyahoga County Department of Consumer Affairs.

The various inspections include big named stores like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and more. 5 of the stores failed a price-check sweep done by the county agency.

Weights and measures inspectors checked posted prices of 975 items at 27 home-improvement and paint stores. They wanted to see if the posted price on the shelves matched the prices that rang up at the register.

The department reports stores that failed the test (meaning they had too many errors) were Sherwin-Williams stores in University Heights and Woodmere, Home Depot in Cleveland Heights and Ace Hardware stores in Garfield Heights and Westlake.

The largest pricing error was a $7.59 undercharge on a safety vest at a Lowe’s store in Rocky River.

Best advice: pay attention when the clerk is scanning your items and double check your receipt before your leave the store.
