AKRON, Ohio — Two people were killed after driving around barriers and into a section of Interstate 76 that is under construction in the Akron area.
At about 6:50 a.m., a construction crew called police to notify them that sometime before their arrival at “the Kenmore Leg” on westbound I-76, a motorcycle went around the barricade, according to Akron police.
Both occupants of the motorcycle were found dead at the scene, police said. Neither were wearing helmets.
The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as Billy Hupp III, of Akron, and the passenger has been identified as Felicia Hammond, of Coventry Township, according to police.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The westbound lanes of I-76’s Kemore Leg, between Interstate 77 and Interstate 277, have been closed for bridge repairs since July 23, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
