Akron police expanding heroin unit

Posted

There's a growing concern out of Akron for the heroin epidemic that's taking more lives in Northeast Ohio than ever.

So far this year, detectives are investigating three times as many heroin deaths as homicides, according to newsnet5.com's media partner, The Akron Beacon Journal.

In 2014, Akron Police Chief James Nice created the two-detective unit that looks into who is providing the deadly doses of the drug. Last year alone, the team investigated 85 heroin-related deaths.

And the unit has done so well that the department is hoping to add two more full-time positions in the future, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
