AKRON, Ohio — More than 250 girls attended a STEM career day at The University of Akron's Student Union on Saturday morning.
During the event, the girls were able to interact with professional women in various STEM fields such as engineering, chemistry, mathematics and others.
Careers in science, technology, engineering and math make up the STEM field.
The Director of Diversity and Inclusion in UA's College of Engineering Heidi Cressman hopes to give girls a higher interest in the non-traditional STEM fields for women.
"Research indicates that girls in the 9 to 13-year-old age range are at an age where they start to lose interest in STEM,” Cressman said. "Events the Women in Engineering program puts on, such as Kids' Career Day, provide an opportunity to keep these young girls engaged and interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics."
The girls who attended the 20th annual Kids’ Career Day were all first through sixth graders.
