A 24-year-old mother is facing charges after police said she drove into Summit Lake with the intention of killing herself and her 2-year-old daughter.
Good Samaritans jumped into the lake and saved the mother and girl from a sinking car.
Police said Dee’Andra McGhee drove a Chevrolet Cobalt, which did not belong to her, into the lake around 6:05 p.m. on July 4. The car went into the water behind a home in the 1500 block of Manchester Road.
Gary Campbell was sitting in his living room when he saw the car speeding down a hill before landing in the lake about 30 to 50 yards from shore. He dialed 911.
Neighbor Amanda Teter also witnessed the car driving down the hill before hearing a loud splash.
Her friends, Eric and Jeff, jumped into the lake and pulled the woman and child out of the car.
Jeff swam back to shore with the child, while Eric swam back with McGhee.
McGhee was transported to Akron General Hospital for a medical evaluation and later booked into the Summit County Jail.
She was charged with attempted murder, endangering children and criminal damaging.
The girl was taken to Akron Children's Hospital for treatment and is expected to by okay, according to police.
According to Summit County Children Services, a grandmother had custody of the girl prior to the incident at the lake. The agency is working with the family to ensure the 2-year-old is safe.
McGhee appeared in court by video Wednesday morning. She was given $500,000 bond.
