Armed robbery suspect shot by police in Cleveland Heights

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — An armed robbery suspect was shot by police Wednesday while fleeing from a Subway in Cleveland Heights, a spokesperson for the city confirmed.

At 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, an armed robbery was reported at the Subway on Mayfield and Warrensville roads, according to Chief of Police Annette Mecklenburg. The suspect pulled a gun on an employee and demanded money.

The suspect then fled the scene and was pursued by police on foot, Mecklenburg said. During the pursuit, the suspect pulled a gun and pointed it in the face of an officer, who then fired and wounded the suspect.

Officers administered first aid to the suspect before EMS arrived on scene.

No Cleveland Heights Police officers were injured, and the suspect was taken to the hospital, according to Mary Trupo, Director of Communications for Cleveland Heights. City officials were told the suspect is in stable condition.

The officer involved in the shooting is on leave, per CHPD protocol.

The suspect has not yet been charged as he is still hospitalized.

City officials are working with the law department to make video of the incident available.
