A 38-year-old man is in the hospital and facing charges after police say he was shot while trying to break into a vehicle at a Cleveland impound lot early Thursday morning.

The shooting happened just after 5 a.m. at Lot 6 on Quigley Road. When officers with the Cleveland Division of Police's Second District responded to the scene they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

According to investigators, the man was attempting to break into a car inside the lot when he was confronted by a civilian contractor working with a towing company. The contractor, who is not a city employee, told police the suspect displayed what appeared to be a firearm.

In response, the contractor fired his own weapon, hitting the suspect in the leg. The man then ran but was later found hiding in a nearby vehicle.

He was taken to the hospital by EMS and is under arrest for breaking and entering. Charges are still pending.

The contractor has not been taken into custody at this time. Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
