Sherwin Williams: No lead in paint used in homes

Sherwin Williams is responding to a petition on change.org that asks the company to stop making lead paint.

According to Cleveland-based Sherwin Williams, all paint products in North America are lead-free. All paint used inside homes does not contain lead.

Outside of North America, an industrial coating for a bridge may contain a small amount of lead for durability, according to the company.

This comes after a petition was started on change.org, alleging that Sherwin Williams and Pittsburgh-based PPG Paints still use lead paint.

According to the CDC, at least 4 million households with high levels of lead have children living in them. About half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 have blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the level at which the CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.

25 percent of Cleveland children poisoned by lead

Cleveland children are at the greatest risk of being exposed to lead in Ohio, with about 25 percent of kids experiencing lead poisoning.

The petitionasks that Sherwin Williams and PPG Paints "immediately establish and post a written policy on their websites agreeing to eliminate the use of all lead compounds in all products that they make, distribute, and/or sell."

Supporters also ask "that they recall all stocks of lead paint in the possession of their customers, in warehouses, or in retail outlets."

As of Saturday at 2 p.m., more than 5,000 people had signed the petition.
