A 16-year-old boy has died after he was shot in the neck Sunday night on Cleveland's west side.

The boy, Bahati Juma, was an immigrant and had been in Cleveland for four years. He came to the United States from Africa with his family ten years ago in search of a better life.

"This is my baby brother. My mom is not in Cleveland, she told me to take care of my little brother, and he just got shot," said Abdul Ebu, Bahati's brother.

The shooting happened on the 11110 block of Detroit Avenue, police said. When officers arrived, they found Bahati with a gunshot wound to his neck. He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center and pronounced dead.

According to police, Bahati had gone to a family member's house when the shooting happened. Witnesses reported hearing two shots.

"He was an honest kid and he lived up to his word," Ebu said.

Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide. No further information has been released.
