CLEVELAND — The Fourth of July marked another special anniversary in Cleveland—the iconic Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square turned 125 years old Thursday.
A celebration and ceremony were held at the base of the monument commemorating its anniversary. Major General John C. Harris Jr., adjutant general of the Ohio Army National Guard, gave the keynote address.
The Pipes and Drums of the Cleveland Police provided bagpipe music for the event.
The monument honors the 9,000 people from Cuyahoga County who fought to defend freedom in the Civil War. More than 1,000 of those individuals gave their lives for the cause.
The monument opened in 1894.
Renown Cleveland architect Levi Scofield designed the monument. He’s also known for designing other historical landmarks such as the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield and the Kimpton Schofield Hotel in Cleveland.
