CLEVELAND — There’s a new K-9 in town and he’s being welcomed as the newest member of the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s Transit Police Force.

His name is Valto and he will be trained to handle both explosive detection and patrol. Valto is a one-year-old Belgian Malinois-Shepherd mix who will live with transit police officer Denis Harmon and his family.

With a total of eight K-9 officers, the RTA Transit Police has more explosive detection canines on staff that any other police department in Greater Cleveland.

Officer Harmon’s current K-9, Kubo, is set to retire on May 25 and Valto will begin service on May 26. He will use the same protective vest Kubo received from Brady’s K-9 Fund last year.

“We are grateful for the years of service that Officer Kubo provided to the Greater Cleveland community and are excited to have Officer Valto join our department,” said Transit Police Chief John Joyce.
