CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has launched a naming contest for male giraffe calf born on April 15.

The public can choose from the following names:

  • Bomani: a warrior
  • Kidogo: little
  • Mosi: born first

Each of the names are unique to giraffes' native region in Africa. The names also pay homage to the calf's low birth weight. Since being integrated into the herd, he has gained 70 pounds.

The public can cast their votes at the Future For Wildlife website or visit the Zoo's Ben Gogolick Giraffe Encounter to make a donation.

The birth of the male calf is a first for the Metroparks Zoo since breeding male Masai giraffe, Bo, came to the zoo at the end of 2017. Bo is the zoo’s tallest giraffe at near 17 feet tall.

On May 10, the almost 2-month-old calf made quite the show for cameras while roaming the Ben Gogolick Giraffe Encounter exhibit with his parents, mom Jada and dad Bo.
