"If the FBI is watching you for suspected terrorist links you shouldn't be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked and, yes, if you were too dangerous to get on a plane, you are too dangerous to buy a gun in America. It may not stop every shooting or terrorist attack but it may stop some and it will save lives and it will protect first responders."
It was supposed to be a political stop in Cleveland on Monday, a kickoff of sorts to Hillary Clinton's fall campaign in Ohio but the weekend shooting in Orlando changed all that for Clinton.
"Today is not a day for politics," Clinton told the crowd gathered at the Cleveland Industrial Innovation Center off East 170th Street and St. Clair Avenue.
"This is a moment when all Americans need to stand together," Clinton said. "Now we have to steal our resolve to respond."
"The Orlando terrorist may be dead but the virus that poisoned his mind remains very much alive."
The attack in Orlando makes it clear, Clinton said we cannot look to simply contain the threat of Isis "we must defeat it."
"Efforts to defeat ISIS on the battlefield must succeed but it will take more than that," Clinton said. "As president I will make identifying and stopping lone wolves a top priority."
Clinton highlighted three areas that need attention in the battle with terrorism at home and abroad with our allies.
She also addressed head on the issue of guns and the need the stricter gun laws.
"Weapons of war have no place on our streets," Clinton said. "If the FBI is watching you for suspected terrorist links you shouldn't be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked," she said.
"And yes, if you were too dangerous to get on a plane, you are too dangerous to buy a gun in America."
"It may not stop every shooting or terrorist attack but it may stop some and it will save lives and it will protect her first responders," said Clinton.
