On Wednesday night, 9-year-old Saniyah Nicholson was caught in the crossfire as two groups shot at each other while she sat in her mother's car. She is the latest in a string of young, innocent lives taken by violence in the streets of Cleveland.

On Thursday, County Executive Armond Budish released a statement about Saniyah's tragic death and announced extra patrols in Cleveland as a result of her loss.

The following statement was released:

The killing of 9-year-old Saniyah Nicholson in a neighborhood shooting last night is tragic. Our hearts go out to the family.

County Councilwoman Shontel Brown has asked us to send out the Sheriff's Impact Unit to assist the city of Cleveland in patrolling the neighborhood. After consultation with the Cleveland Police Department, we are dispatching Sheriff's deputies tonight.

The senseless killings must stop. We will do all we can to protect the residents of Cuyahoga County.
