Uber driver drives himself to hospital after being shot during carjacking attempt, police say

CLEVELAND — A 68-year-old man working as a Uber driver was shot in the chest during an attempted carjacking in Cleveland early Tuesday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Cleveland Police Department.

Police said the shooting happened at around 3 a.m. in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Woodstock Avenue.

Cedric King, who was working as an Uber driver, was approached by an unknown male after dropping off a passenger.

He was shot during what police said was an attempted carjacking.

King drove himself to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Police said no arrests have been made at this time. He is in critical condition.

King is a Marine veteran who served in Vietnam and has worked as a prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. He is a graduate of the Cleveland State Marshall College of Law, and practiced law in Washington D.C..

The family is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case, and is asking anyone with information to call Cleveland Police or third district detectives.
