Monday through Friday, about 1,000 youth attend Cleveland’s Boys and Girls Clubs at its 12 locations across the city. The opportunity provides tutors and athletic activities. Some even see the club as a safe space. A new project is giving students hope for the new school year ahead.
“A lot of our kids come from a situation where having an additional person in their side is of great value,” said Renata Brown, director of program operations. “Some of our kids come from rough situations."
Students receive help with school work. According to Brown, 91 percent of students who also attend the Boys and Girls Club, go on to graduate high school. However, according to the state's website, graduation rates have earned Cleveland Public Schools a grade of "F."
Nearly 72 percent of students graduate in four years.
Brown said, recently, the club took on a project to offer encouragement to kids.
"We asked people who are familiar with the Boys and Girls Club, to write a quick little note,” said Brown.
“This is really important. Seeing a note from a total stranger," she said.
The notes encouraged kids to do their best this school year.
"It’s cool, because I never got one like this before,” said student, Zoe Edwards.
"It’s something to get you boosted for school,” said student, Caleb White.
